Calculate actual roof surface area from plan dimensions and pitch
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof area. It is the standard unit for ordering shingles and estimating US roofing jobs. 1 square = 100 sq ft = 9.29 m². To convert m² to squares: divide by 9.29.
Most architectural shingles: 3 bundles per square. 3-tab: 3-4 bundles per square. Premium/luxury: 4-5 bundles. Always check the bundle label — coverage varies by manufacturer.
First get actual roof area: plan_area × pitch_factor. Then convert to squares: area_sqft ÷ 100. At 1,500 sq ft plan, 6:12 pitch (factor 1.118): 1,500 × 1.118 = 1,677 sq ft = 16.77 → 17 squares.
Add 10-15% waste to squares before ordering. 17 squares at 12% waste: 17 × 1.12 = 19.04 → 20 squares → 60 bundles. Round up — partial squares are still charged full price.
squares = ceil(roof_area_sqft ÷ 100)
total = ceil(squares × (1 + waste%))
bundles = total_squares × bundles_per_square
squares = m² ÷ 9.29
100 sq ft of roof area. Standard US roofing unit. 1 square = 100 sq ft = 9.29 m².
Most architectural shingles: 3 bundles. 3-tab: 3-4. Premium: 4-5. Check packaging.
Divide by 9.29. 100 m² = 10.77 squares. Round up to 11.
